The Academy of Movement Image Arts and Sciences has unveiled the shortlists for a number of classes on the 2024 Academy Awards. Vying for nominations for Greatest Unique Track are Dua Lipa and Billie Eilish for Barbie songs, in addition to Olivia Rodrigo for “Can’t Catch Me Now,” Sharon Van Etten for “Quiet Eyes,” Jarvis Cocker for Asteroid Metropolis’s “Expensive Alien (Who Artwork in Heaven),” and extra.
Composers on the Greatest Unique Rating shortlist embrace Mica Levi, Mark Ronson, Ludwig Göransson, Joe Hisaishi, John Williams, the late Robbie Robertson, and Daniel Pemberton, amongst others. The Oscars shortlists have some overlap with the 2024 Golden Globe Awards nominations. The Barbie songs “Dance the Evening,” “What Was I Made For?,” and “I’m Simply Ken” are nominated on the Golden Globes, as is Lenny Kravitz’s Rustin monitor “Street to Freedom.” And all six Unique Rating nominees on the Golden Globes are on the Oscars shortlist.
The 2023 Academy Award for Greatest Unique Rating went to Volker Bertelmann (aka Hauschka) for his work on All Quiet on the Western Entrance. And the Oscar for Greatest Unique Track went to “Naatu Naatu” creators M.M. Keeravani and Chandrabose, who beat out Woman Gaga, Rihanna, David Byrne, and others.
In 2022, Billie Eilish and her brother, Finneas, received Greatest Unique Track on the Academy Awards for “No Time to Die.” The musicians additionally performed the James Bond tune on the ceremony.
